《大熊貓的利爪》並不是一本討論動物習性的科學作品。作者文達峰以此作為書名，意在藉由溫馴可愛的大熊貓來形容崛起的中國，在看似和平無害的外表下，其實暗藏可能會傷害貿易公平、破壞社會秩序、甚至顛覆民主制度的圖謀。

本書從加拿大與中國長達一百五十年的交往講起。不同於歐洲各國在十九世紀對中國施加西方帝國主義的侵略與佔領，也不同於美國在二十世紀把中國視為共產主義陣營的一份子而加以圍堵，加拿大與中國的關係源自加拿大傳教士把中國視為一片需要被基督教拯救的苦難大地。傳教士來到中國蓋醫院、建學校、落地生根、甚至支持中國共產黨的革命。這些傳教士的後代在共產革命成功之後，或者留在中國成為新中國的捍衛者，或者回到加拿大成為外交決策圈最為親中的一股勢力。

隨著時局的演進，來到二十一世紀，中國已經不再是過去那個受到欺凌的國家了，反而變成一個不斷利用硬實力威嚇、軟實力滲透、銳實力脅迫其他國家的強權。但是加拿大的領導人仍然誤判現實，錯估雙方關係；在此同時，中國共產黨及其在地協力者則是不斷地從加拿大人的無知當中獲利。作者在本書以鉅細靡遺的實證指出，在面對中國共產黨滲透與影響加拿大政界、學界、媒體界並掌控加拿大華人的行動時，渥太華執政當局不僅沒有能力加以辨識，也缺乏予以因應的措施。

許多加拿大人相信，只要他們多與中共接觸，黨就會感受到加拿大價值的美好。一旦黨員們見識到自由民主政體帶來了自由與人權，他們就會迫不及待地推動中國走上改革之路。但是實情並非如此，他們根本沒有把加拿大的價值放在眼裡。於是作者明白地呼籲加拿大人：是該放棄傳教士精神的時候了。

在木村泰賢的生命後期，主要的體系性教理著作，就是這本全書草稿完成於一九二六年一月九日晚上的《阿毘達磨佛教思想論》。

本書原著，是屬於印度佛教介於原始佛教與大乘佛教之間，歷時約五百年左右的──部派分裂時期的各種佛教詮釋教理──以現代性體系呈現的新詮釋論書。或者我們可以說，這是有關部派佛教時期最著名的現代型教理概論著作：它是例如北傳的世親著《俱舍論》或如南傳的覺音著《清淨道論》那樣經典等級的，二十世紀現代版新綜合詮釋論書。

再者，本書是從緒論開始，論辯有關原始佛教思想與阿毘達磨佛教思想之別的學術史檢討，而這部分其實就是概括重述木村在其博士論文中的導論成果。之後，本書全部詮釋體系，即按：佛、法、僧三者的先後順序，開始展開各種神化佛陀的辯證歷程；然後是各類菩薩的演變狀況；之後開始討論宇宙構成的要素、世界觀、心理論、倫理論、修道論六大主題。因而，木村的「組織佛教學」終於在其《阿毘達磨佛教思想論》一書，達到最成熟的境界。

中國近代歷史讀物，時代雖近，卻往往仍予人一股難以親近的距離感。現代讀者大多無法想像，在巨變頻生、戰亂進逼的時空環境，身為一個「人」的個體，究竟是如何去面對、看待，又如何真正生活其中。戰爭的爆發，哪股勢力推進到哪裡，只是一段記載；物價的漲跌，這個月米的價格多少，只是一個統計數據；交通線的推展，哪條鐵路銜接哪個港口，只是地圖上的一條線。這些與那些，是如何伴隨我們的曾祖父母輩、祖父母輩，甚或是父母輩的人生？在政府檔案裡找不到的解答，日記則提供了另一種更有「人味」的指引視角。

民國歷史文化學社出版一系列的民國日記，包括本次的吳墉祥戰後日記，就是為了要讓逝去的時代影像鮮活起來。為家屬留紀念，也為歷史留痕跡。

吳墉祥自1927年赴南京考取中央黨務學校起，便有記載日記的習慣，可惜於戰亂過程中，1944年以前日記亡佚不可得。本次出版雖取名為在台日記，實則起自1951年1月1日。吳墉祥自1949年來台後，除了初期短暫清算齊魯公司業務外，是以擔任會計師維生。在美援進入台灣的背景下，1956年起受聘為美國國際合作總署駐華安全分署高級稽核，主要任務負責美援項目的帳務查核，足跡遍及全台各地。1960年代台灣經濟好轉，美援項目逐漸減少，至1965年美援結束，改到中美合營的台達化學工業公司，擔任會計主任、財務長，直到1976年退休；國大代表的職務則保留至1991年退職。

吳墉祥長期服務於金融界，對銀行、會計及財務工作歷練豐富，這一點在《吳墉祥戰後日記》的價值中已充分顯露無遺。來台以後的《吳墉祥在台日記》，更是他親歷中華民國從美援中站穩腳步、再到出口擴張達成經濟奇蹟的各個階段，尤其遺留下來詳實精采的日記，成為回顧戰台灣後經濟社會發展的寶貴文獻。

冉鵬（1906-1978），字勺庭，湖南常德人。於1931年（民國20年）國民政府第一屆高等文官考試，以第三名優等錄取，分發行政院任科長、分組主任、簡任秘書、參事、副主計長，側身中樞二十年，歷經十任院長。1949年12月隨行政院遷居台灣，留下妻子皇甫道安及六名子女在大陸。在台先後任職經濟部顧問兼商業司長、外貿審議會主委兼法制組長，新竹玻璃公司常董總經理。1978年1月病逝台北。

冉鵬日記自1931年起，至1977年終，共四十七年。現留存1949年至1977年，共二十九冊。本書所選日記，是1949年全年（12月9日前在大陸），加選1950年前三個月（在台灣），共計十五個月。這段時間正值國民政府內戰失利，步步撤退，自南京而廣州，最後從成都抵達台北。冉鵬身居行政中樞，見證繫於存亡的艱苦歷程。

1950年3月因蔣介石復職總統、閻錫山內閣總辭，冉鵬也隨之辭職，離開行政院。1949年1月至1950年3月的經歷，是他全部日記中最重要的部分，也是他服務行政院最後階段的完整紀錄。

中國1949年的大變局及其闡釋，影響至大。冉氏家族繁衍已逾三代，物換星移，人事全非。特在日記逐月的註釋後，以〈冉鵬自撰年譜〉，作為附錄，期盼對閱讀者有所疏引。

日記、書信是研究人物及其時代最重要的一手材料，它不只透露著作者的真性情，而且展露那個時代的訊息。與檔案文書、報刊、方志等資料相比，書信、日記類史料別有意味。私人日記一般是當天所寫，也有數日後補寫的，經過逐日、逐月、逐年記錄，累積而成。這種在光陰流轉中逐步形成的編年體文獻，將作者的言行、見聞、思想乃至情緒，隨時定格、固化。日記的「原始性」也因此而與眾不同。

王貽蓀（1918-2009），出生於江蘇省江陰縣的祝塘鎮。父親在鎮上開設雜貨店，販售五穀雜糧。初中畢業後，王貽蓀在江陰縣的民眾學校任職，從事民眾教育工作。不久抗戰爆發，他跟著父親向西遷徙，抵達長江中游的武漢。他在鄉政訓練班受訓後，擔任鄉政助理員，輔導湖北省鄉政建設。隨後在四川綦江考入戰時幹部工作訓練團，以優異成績畢業後，先派湖北見習，數月後調回四川工作。經數年輾轉，最後在重慶落腳，在後方勤務部特別黨部任職。

1941年，正是王貽蓀戰幹團結訓，開始投入新工作時。他在本年中，先是派駐湖北恩施實習，被指派到部隊中為指導員（職務類似於今日輔導長），而後又調第六戰區司令部政治部任職。在部隊中，他詳細記下所見所聞，以及與士兵對談之內容與心得。派任政治部後，他也對工作與生活有詳盡的紀錄。

這些點點滴滴的記載，讓人對抗戰時期的政工、士兵及一般平民的生活有極其生動與出乎意料的認識，拼湊出各階層的圖像。

抗戰勝利後，國民政府面臨戰後的復員與重建工作，其時蘇軍已進入東北，接受日軍投降，東北陷於一種頗為微妙的局勢中。國民政府於1945年8月31日，議決通過「收復東北各省處理辦法綱要」，決定在長春設立軍事委員會委員長東北行營，以綜理東北各省收復事宜。派任熊式輝為東北行營主任兼政治委員會主任委員，張嘉璈為經濟委員會主任委員，蔣經國為外交部東北特派員，負責籌畫自蘇軍手中接收東北之各項事宜。東北行營副參謀長董彥平受命兼任駐蘇聯軍事代表團團長，派駐蘇聯軍總司令部，以資聯繫。

《內戰在東北：駐蘇軍事代表團》以董彥平保存的毛筆原件史料為主，第一冊為「駐蘇軍事代表團交涉報告書」，綜述長達六個月的交涉經過。第二冊為董團長與蘇軍副參謀長巴佛洛夫斯基的15次會議紀錄，以及與特羅增科參謀長的17次會議紀錄。

戰後東北問題錯綜複雜，關係中國時局的發展演變，國共美蘇三國四方縱橫捭闔，外交關係與內政問題互相交織，最終又歸結為國共兩黨之爭奪。此時在中央運籌帷幄的蔣中正、宋子文、王世杰，在東北現地與蘇軍折衝樽俎的熊式輝、張嘉璈、蔣經國、董彥平等人，都是舉足輕重的角色。熊式輝的《海桑集》、張嘉璈的《東北接收交涉日記》，國史館的《蔣中正總統文物》、《蔣經國總統文物》、《國民政府檔案》，史丹福大學胡佛研究所陸續公開的「蔣中正日記」、「蔣經國日記」，民國歷史文化學社出版《內戰在東北：駐蘇軍事代表團》等史料，對戰後東北研究當有相當助益。

In The Primary Way, the distinguished scholar of Chinese philosophy Chung-ying Cheng synthesizes his lifetime of work on the Yijing, also known as the I Ching or Book of Changes. Cheng offers a systematic engagement with the classic Chinese text as a philosophy that is still valuable and relevant today. In contemporary philosophical terms, Cheng has developed the ontological hermeneutics of the Yijing as well as its philosophical methodology of symbolic reference in a holistic and onto-generative system of trigrams and hexagrams. The book is organized around eight themes that illuminate Cheng’s interpretation of the Yijing as a philosophy for creative human action and transformation. He demonstrates how the philosophy of change in the Yijing embodies early Chinese ontology, cosmology, epistemology, and virtue ethics in the interpretation of divinatory judgments. Cheng’s work shows how the philosophy of change contains a vision of humanity as creatively related to heaven and earth, and how it gives positive meaning to any change as part of a ceaseless creativity. What forces shaped the twentieth-century world? Capitalism and communism are usually seen as engaged in a fight-to-the-death during the Cold War. With the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the Chinese Communist Party aimed to end capitalism. Karl Gerth argues that despite the socialist rhetoric of class warfare and egalitarianism, Communist Party policies actually developed a variety of capitalism and expanded consumerism. This negated the goals of the Communist Revolution across the Mao era (1949–1976) down to the present. Through topics related to state attempts to manage what people began to desire - wristwatches and bicycles, films and fashion, leisure travel and Mao badges - Gerth challenges fundamental assumptions about capitalism, communism, and countries conventionally labeled as socialist. In so doing, his provocative history of China suggests how larger forces related to the desire for mass-produced consumer goods reshaped the twentieth-century world and remade people's lives.

In the early twentieth century China’s most famous commercial artists promoted new cultural and civic values through sketches of idealized modern women in journals, newspapers, and compendia called One Hundred Illustrated Beauties. This genre drew upon a centuries-old tradition of books featuring illustrations of women who embodied virtue, desirability, and Chinese cultural values, and changes in it reveal the foundational value shifts that would bring forth a democratic citizenry in the post-imperial era. The illustrations presented ordinary readers with tantalizing visions of the modern lifestyles that were imagined to accompany Republican China’s new civic consciousness.

Citizens of Beauty is the first book to explore the One Hundred Illustrated Beauties in order to compare social ideals during China’s shift from imperial to Republican times. The book contextualizes the social and political significance of the aestheticized female body in a rapidly changing genre, showing how progressive commercial artists used images of women to promote a vision of Chinese modernity that was democratic, mobile, autonomous, and free from the crippling hierarchies and cultural norms of old China.

In this major new study, Margherita Zanasi argues that basic notions of a free market economy emerged in China a century and half earlier than in Europe. In response to the commercial revolutions of the late 1500s, Chinese intellectuals and officials called for the end of state intervention in the market, recognizing its power to self-regulate. They also noted the elasticity of domestic demand and production, arguing in favour of ending long-standing rules against luxury consumption, an idea that emerged in Europe in the late seventeenth and early nineteenth centuries. Zanasi challenges Eurocentric theories of economic modernization as well as the assumption that European Enlightenment thought was unique in its ability to produce innovative economic ideas. She instead establishes a direct connection between observations of local economic conditions and the formulation of new theories, revealing the unexpected flexibility of the Confucian tradition and its accommodation of seemingly unorthodox ideas.

Lovely West Lake, near scenic Hangzhou on China’s east coast, has been celebrated as a major tourist site since the twelfth century. Now as then, visitors boat to its islands, stroll through its gardens, worship in its temples, and immortalize it in poetry and painting. Hangzhou and West Lake have long served as icons of Chinese landscape appreciation, literary and artistic expression, and tourism.

In the first in-depth English-language study of this picturesque locale, Xiaolin Duan examines the interplay between human enterprise and the natural environment during the Song dynasty (960–1279). After the Song lost north China to the Jurchens and the imperial court fled south, a new capital was established at Hangzhou, making the area the national political and cultural center. West Lake became a model for idealized nature, fashioned by the diverse activities of its visitors. Duan shows how engagements in, on, and around West Lake influenced visitors’ conceptualization of nature and sparked the emergence of the lake as a tourist destination, highlighting how the natural landscape played a role in shaping social and cultural constructs.

Incorporating evidence from miscellanies, local and temple gazetteers, paintings, maps, poems, and anecdotes, The Rise of West Lake explores the complexity of the lake as an interactive site where ecological and economic concerns contended and where spiritual pursuits overlapped with aesthetic ones.

In the nineteenth century, the Qing empire experienced a period of profound turmoil caused by an unprecedented conjunction of natural disasters, domestic rebellions, and foreign incursions. The imperial government responded to these calamities by introducing an array of new policies and institutions to bolster its power across its massive territories. In the process, Qing officials launched campaigns for natural resource development, seeking to take advantage of the unexploited lands, waters, and minerals of the empire’s vast hinterlands and borderlands.

In this book, Peter B. Lavelle uses the life and career of Chinese statesman Zuo Zongtang (1812–1885) as a lens to explore the environmental history of this era. Although known for his pacification campaigns against rebel movements, Zuo was at the forefront of the nineteenth-century quest for natural resources. Influenced by his knowledge of nature, geography, and technology, he created government bureaus and oversaw state-funded projects to improve agriculture, sericulture, and other industries in territories across the empire. His work forged new patterns of colonial development in the Qing empire’s northwest borderlands, including Xinjiang, at a time when other empires were scrambling to secure access to resources around the globe. Weaving a narrative across the span of Zuo’s lifetime, The Profits of Nature offers a unique approach to understanding the dynamic relationship among social crises, colonialism, and the natural world during a critical juncture in Chinese history, between the high tide of imperial power in the eighteenth century and the challenges of modern state-building in the twentieth century.

Helen Zia is the author of Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People, a finalist for the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize (Bill Clinton referred to the book in two separate Rose Garden speeches). Zia is the co-author, with Wen Ho Lee, of My Country Versus Me: The First-Hand Account by the Los Alamos Scientist Who Was Falsely Accused of Being a Spy. She is also a former executive editor of Ms. magazine. A Fulbright Scholar, Zia first visited China in 1972, just after President Nixon’s historic trip. A graduate of Princeton University, she holds an honorary doctor of laws degree from the City University of New York School of Law and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
