新加坡的國土面積只有六百多平方公里，略多於香港的一半，人口五百四十多萬，不及台北加新北。然而，它卻是全球首屈一指的航運、貿易、金融、教育中心。全球每年有一半的海上貿易從新加坡旁邊的麻六甲海峽通過，其港口每年經手約五億噸的貨運。作為美國重要的商業與戰略夥伴，新加坡在2012年吸引到的美國直接投資高達1160億美元，是對中國的兩倍，對印度的五至六倍。以城市而論，新加坡的經濟實力排名全球第六，而人均GDP排名第二，僅次於紐約。《金融時報》稱它為「東方的蘇黎世」，《經濟學人》將其整體經商方便性評為全球第一。

同時，儘管商業發達、社會富裕，透過多種高度管制的社會主義政策，新加坡有效避免資本主義社會的許多弊病，其失業人口低於2%，有90%的民眾擁有自己的住家。甚至它的威權主義政府與嚴厲的法治，也成為中國等許多集權國家欽羨的對象。

然而，這一切得來不易。當新加坡於1965年被馬來西亞「掃地出門」、被迫獨立時，沒有人看好它能在險惡的環境中生存。新加坡一無所有。沒有腹地，天然資源與勞動力不足。歷史短淺，種族、語言、信仰複雜，難以凝聚國家認同意識。資源匱乏、經濟停滯、外強進犯、內部族群衝突，隨時都有可能奪走這個新興國家的性命。但是，新加坡做到了。不僅成為赤道地帶最發達的城市，甚至躍升為世界級的小城大國。成功的條件主要有二。其一是海洋。新加坡的地理位置得天獨厚，位於從歐洲通往中國的貿易航路上的中間點，讓它成為船隻的補給、貨物的集結與分銷、水手休憩的首選地點。結合平靜無波的深水港，地理優勢使得它多年榮居全球最大貨櫃裝卸港口。

沖繩在二次世界大戰歷經戰火摧殘，史料文物毀失殆盡，現存於臺大圖書館的許多琉球抄本益形貴重。其中臺北帝國大學時期自沖繩抄錄的琉球文學典籍《琉歌大觀》，是原著者真境名安興採集與考證琉球歌謠的心血之作，且為唯一傳世版本。

臺大圖書館與琉球大學藉由跨國合作計畫，將臺大館藏《琉歌大觀》進行翻刻暨現代日文語譯，出版全文刊本《國立臺灣大學圖書館典藏琉歌大觀》全四卷。本書為第一卷，內容包括《琉歌大觀》臺大抄本之「卷壹」〈序文〉、〈短歌及長歌編纂大意〉、〈參考書目〉、〈作者姓名索引〉、〈歌詞解釋〉、〈第壹輯 自尚德時代至尚敬時代止 自寬正二年（1461）至寶曆元年（1751）二百九十年間〉；「卷貳」〈第貳輯 自尚穆時代至尚育時代 自寶曆二年（1752）至弘化四年（1847）九十五年間〉、〈第參輯 自尚育時代至尚泰時代 自天保五年（1834）至明治十二年（1879）四十五年間〉、〈第四輯 自尚育時代至尚泰時代 自天保五年（1834）至明治十二年（1879）四十五年間〉。

在他的成長年代，台灣歷經韓戰、八二三砲戰、「反共」的白色恐怖、五二四事件等。他曾獻策保護釣魚台的主權，參與處理「江南」案的餘波，也曾為陷入政治案件的彭明敏求過情，在深夜聽到父親與蔣經國的對話。成年後陶龍生留學美國、取得最高學位，克服種族歧視、自創天地，成為有名望的學者律師，和業餘小說家。在美國，陶龍生曾參與和觀察法院的判決，看到民權運動的演進、女權的發展、反戰的風潮、死刑存廢的辯論、持槍權利的氾濫、恐怖攻擊的過程和災難，以及不息的種族對立。

這本書的作者自比「點滴」，觀察國際潮流，「窺管看世局」，用講故事的筆法，寫出中、台、美三者互為影響、交纏不休的歷史流程，也是反映一個時代的縮影。

本書は、川田甕江（一八三〇～一八九六）の文稿三種類を影印したものである。周知の通り、甕江は、三島中州（一八三一～一九一九）や重野成斎（一八二七～一九一〇）と並び稱される、明治三大文宗の一人であり、東宮侍講という栄譽にあずかった漢學者でもある。かつ備中松山藩の藩政や諜報活動に従事した実務家である。さらに、明治政府にも出仕し、學問をもって政治に貢獻した。ところが、これほど著名な漢學者であるにもかかわらず、甕江の文集は、現在に至るまで出版されておらず、甕江自身についても、研究の対象とされてこなかった。……要するに、甕江の文稿は、生前沒後を問わず、複數の異なる人物や異なる経緯のもとに編纂が企図された。そして、それら全てが実を結ばずに終わったために、現在われわれは甕江の文集を手に取ることができない、という狀態にあるらしい。

これは、甕江の斯學における功績の大きさを鑑みれば、まことに遺憾である。このほど伝存する文稿の中でも、特に整備された形態の、三種類の文稿を一括で影印出版する。ひとえに、資料の存在を眾知せしむると共に、その活用に便あらしむることによって、日本漢學の成立と発展に寄與するものと信ずるが故である。

Far more than a record of the past, history to the Chinese is the magister vitae (teacher of life): the storehouse of moral lessons and bureaucratic precedents. Mirroring the Past presents a comprehensive history of traditional Chinese historiography from antiquity to the mid-Qing period. Organized chronologically, the book traces the development of historical thinking and writing in Imperial China, beginning with the earliest forms of historical consciousness and ending with adumbrations of the fundamentally different views engendered by mid-nineteenth-century encounters with the West. The historiography of each era is explored on two levels: first, the gathering of material and the writing and production of narratives to describe past events; second, the thinking and reflecting on meanings and patterns of the past. Significantly, the book embeds within this chronological structure integrated views of Chinese historiography, bringing to light the purposive, didactic, and normative uses of the past.

Examining both the worlds of official and unofficial historiography, the authors lay bare the ingenious ways in which Chinese scholars extracted truth from events and reveal how schemas and philosophies of history were constructed and espoused. In 1978 the films Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow and Drunken Master, both starring a young Jackie Chan, caused a stir in the Hong Kong cinema industry and changed the landscape of martial arts cinema. Mixing virtuoso displays of acrobatic kung fu with knockabout humor to huge box office success, they broke the mold of the tragic and heroic martial arts film and sparked not only a wave of imitations, but also a much longer trend for kung fu comedies that continues to the present day.

Legacies of the Drunken Master—the first book-length analysis of kung fu comedy—interrogates the politics of the films and their representations of the performing body. It draws on an interdisciplinary engagement with popular culture and an interrogation of the critical literature on Hong Kong and martial arts cinema to offer original readings of key films. These readings pursue the genre in terms of its carnival aesthetic, the utopias of the body it envisions, its highly stylized depictions of violence, its images of masculinity, and the registers of its “hysterical” laughter.

The book’s analyses are carried out amidst kung fu comedy’s shifting historical contexts, including the aftermath of the 1960s radical youth movements, the rapidly globalizing colonial enclave of Hong Kong and the emerging consciousness of its 1997 handover to China, and the transnationalization of cinema audiences. It argues that through kung fu comedy’s images of the body, the genre articulated in complex and often contradictory ways political realities relevant to late twentieth-century Hong Kong and the wider conditions of globalized capitalism. The kung fu comedy entwines us in a popular cultural history that stretches into the folk past and forward into utopian and dystopian possibilities.

Theoretically rich and critical, Legacies of the Drunken Master aims to be at the forefront of scholarship on martial arts cinema. It also addresses readers with a broader interest in Hong Kong culture and politics during the 1970s and 1980s, postcolonialism in East Asia, and action and comedy films in a global context—as well as those fascinated with the performing body in the martial arts.

Contrary to longtime assumptions about the insular nature of imperial China’s legal system, Circulating the Code demonstrates that in the Qing dynasty (1644–1911) most legal books were commercially published and available to anyone who could afford to buy them. Publishers not only extended circulation of the dynastic code and other legal texts but also enhanced the judicial authority of case precedents and unofficial legal commentaries by making them more broadly available in convenient formats. As a result, the laws no longer represented privileged knowledge monopolized by the imperial state and elites. Trade in commercial legal imprints contributed to the formation of a new legal culture that included the free flow of accurate information, the rise of nonofficial legal experts, a large law-savvy population, and a high litigation rate.

Comparing different official and commercial editions of the Qing Code, popular handbooks for amateur legal practitioners, and manuals for community legal lectures, Ting Zhang demonstrates how the dissemination of legal information transformed Chinese law, judicial authority, and popular legal consciousness.

Very often in Buddhist art, especially Buddhist art of ancient China, small figures, mostly Buddhas, are depicted in the halo and/or aureole of a Buddha image, and, less often, of a bodhisattva image. What is the meaning and significance of this? Despite the prevalence of this motif, its meaning and its significance in Buddhist history are poorly, if at all, understood. In fact, emanating other Buddhas is associated with the fundamental nature of the Buddha and the mechanism of how the Buddha functions to spread Buddhist teachings to every corner in the cosmic world. In this regard, the study of this motif—one of the purposes of this book—is not only a study of a specific iconographic convention in Buddhist art but also a study of the revolutionary change in the way Buddha was represented, a geographical and temporal development that reflected the change of Buddha’s nature in the eyes of his followers.

Besides being a general convention, the depiction of emanated Buddhas in the aureole also appears in some of the most spectacular and sometimes widely debated iconographies in Buddhist art, for example, the dharmadhatu Buddha images, in which the Buddhist cosmologic system is shown inside a Buddha’s body, and the Mohammed Nari Stele from Gandhara. Therefore as the second task this book, this study also examines and sheds light on a number of important iconographies in Buddhist art.

More importantly, this motif had appeared in various places in Central Asia and East Asia throughout the centuries. Traditionally, Buddhist images of the same iconography across different regions are studied as one coherent subject matter, assuming they all have the same meaning. By contextualizing these images in local history and local Buddhism, which is the third task of this study, this book also aims to examine much broader issues in Buddhist history and cultural transmission.

This is an important book for students and scholars in art history, Buddhist studies, and East Asian studies.

In the Ruins of the Japanese Empire concludes that early East Asian Cold War history needs to be studied within the framework of post-imperial history. Japan’s surrender did not mean that the Japanese and former imperial subjects would immediately disavow imperial ideology. The end of the Japanese empire unleashed unprecedented destruction and violence on the periphery. Lives were destroyed; names of cities altered; collaborationist regimes—which for over a decade dominated vast populations—melted into the air as policeman, bureaucrats, soldiers, and technocrats offered their services as nationalists, revolutionaries or communists. Power did not simply change hands swiftly and smoothly. In the chaos of the new order, legal anarchy, revenge, ethnic displacement, and nationalist resentments stalked the postcolonial lands of northeast Asia, intensifying bloody civil wars in societies radicalized by total war, militarization, and mass mobilization.

Kushner and Levidis’s volume follows these processes as imperial violence reordered demographics and borders, and involved massive political, economic, and social dislocation as well as stubborn continuities. From the hunt for “traitors” in Korea and China to the brutal suppression of the Taiwanese by the Chinese Nationalist government in the long-forgotten February 28 Incident, the research shows how the empire’s end acted as a catalyst for renewed attempts at state-building. From the imperial edge to the metropole, investigations shed light on how prewar imperial values endured during postwar Japanese rearmament and in party politics. Nevertheless, many Japanese actively tried to make amends for wartime transgressions and rebuild Japan’s posture in East Asia by cultivating religious and cultural connections.

In 1702, the second emperor of the Qing dynasty ordered construction of a new summer palace in Rehe (now Chengde, Hebei) to support his annual tours north among the court’s Inner Mongolian allies. The Mountain Estate to Escape the Heat (Bishu Shanzhuang) was strategically located at the node of mountain “veins” through which the Qing empire’s geomantic energy was said to flow. At this site, from late spring through early autumn, the Kangxi emperor presided over rituals of intimacy and exchange that celebrated his rule: garden tours, banquets, entertainments, and gift giving.

Stephen Whiteman draws on resources and methods from art and architectural history, garden and landscape history, early modern global history, and historical geography to reconstruct the Mountain Estate as it evolved under Kangxi, illustrating the importance of landscape as a medium for ideological expression during the early Qing and in the early modern world more broadly. Examination of paintings, prints, historical maps, newly created maps informed by GIS-based research, and personal accounts reveals the significance of geographic space and its representation in the negotiation of Qing imperial ideology. The first monograph in any language to focus solely on the art and architecture of the Kangxi court, Where Dragon Veins Meet illuminates the court’s production and deployment of landscape as a reflection of contemporary concerns and offers new insight into the sources and forms of Qing power through material expressions.

Eulogy for Burying a Crane (Yi he ming) is perhaps the most eccentric piece in China’s calligraphic canon. Apparently marking the burial of a crane, the large inscription, datable to 514 CE, was once carved into a cliff on Jiaoshan Island in the Yangzi River. Since the discovery of its ruins in the early eleventh century, it has fascinated generations of scholars and calligraphers and been enshrined as a calligraphic masterpiece. Nonetheless, skeptics have questioned the quality of the calligraphy and complained that its fragmentary state and worn characters make assessment of its artistic value impossible. Moreover, historians have trouble fitting it into the storyline of Chinese calligraphy. Such controversies illuminate moments of discontinuity in the history of the art form that complicate the mechanism of canon formation.

In this volume, Lei Xue examines previous epigraphic studies and recent archaeological finds to consider the origin of the work in the sixth century and then trace its history after the eleventh century. He suggests that formation of the canon of Chinese calligraphy over two millennia has been an ongoing process embedded in the sociopolitical realities of particular historical moments. This biography of the stone monument Eulogy for Burying a Crane reveals Chinese calligraphy to be a contested field of cultural and political forces that have constantly reconfigured the practice, theory, and historiography of this unique art form.

The Politics of Higher Education: The Imperial University in Northern Song China uses the history of the Imperial University of the Northern Song to show the limits of the Song emperors’ powers. At the time, the university played an increasingly dominant role in selecting government officials. This role somehow curtailed the authority of the Song emperors, who did not possess absolute power and, more often than not, found their actions to be constrained by the institution.

The nomination mechanism left room for political maneuvering and stakeholders—from emperors to scholar-officials—tried to influence the process. Hence, power struggles among successive emperors trying to assert their imperial authority ensued. Demands for greater autonomy by officials were, for example, unceasing. Chu Ming-kin shows that the road to autocracy was anything but linear. In fact, during the Northern Song dynasty, competition and compromises over diverse agendas constantly altered the political landscape.

While many scholars attribute China’s emergent queer cultures to the neoliberal turn and the global political landscape, Wei refuses to take these assumptions for granted. He finds that the values and pitfalls of the development-induced mobilities and post-development syndromes have conjointly structured and sustained people’s ongoing longings and sufferings under the dual pressure of compulsory familism and compulsory development.

While young gay men are increasingly mobilized in their decision-making to pursue sociocultural and socioeconomic capital to afford a queer life, the ubiquitous and compulsory mobilities have significantly reshaped and redefined today’s queer kinship structure, transnational cultural network, and social stratification in China and capitalist Asia. With Queer Chinese Cultures and Mobilities, Wei interrogates the meanings and functions of mobilities at the forefront of China’s internal transformation and international expansion for its great dream of revival, when gender and sexuality have become increasingly mobilized with geographical, cultural, and social class migrations and mobilizations beyond traditional and conventional frameworks, categories, and boundaries.

The passion and commitment of the artists who were born under the repressive weight of the Japanese occupation, the remnants of the decaying imperial order and the times of colonial humiliation are inspiring.

Zhang’s words and wood-block style of art tell us the story of his father’s extraordinary youth and very early rise to prominence due to his great talent with words. We see and hear the intensity of what it meant to be alive at such a significant moment in the history of China, a country that understands itself as the heir to one of the greatest civilizations the world has ever known. The humiliations and social injustice the Chinese people had endured in the colonial period were no longer bearable. And yet there were major factional differences between those who wanted to create a modern China. Ange’s words and art paint the picture for us through his father’s story, accompanied by sidebars that explain the historical context.

The book ends in a burst of glorious color and song, with the words of Yellow River Cantata in Mandarin, as well as newly translated into English. This great song turns eighty years old in 2019, and will be sung and performed by huge orchestras and choirs around the world, as the Chinese diaspora has embraced the cantata as its own.

Ange Zhang has illustrated many books for Groundwood, most notably his memoir of growing up during the Cultural Revolution, Red Land, Yellow River, which won the Bologna Ragazzi Award. A former designer for the National Opera Theater in Beijing, he now works as an animation artist. He lives in Toronto.
