歐陽炯乃花間詞人，蘭麝細香，善於刻畫豔情，錦城春色沸若狂，質豔精工，亦為唐五代詞之重要名家。而〈花間集序〉更是劃時代之詞論宣言，具有重要之美學意義。〈唐五代詞律探賾〉、〈《云謠集》韻律探賾〉則相繼探索唐五代詞體之特有面貌，確立敦煌詞體之基本面相。與宋詞韻律不盡相同。

Ngu explores how Malaysia's Barisan Nasional (BN) regime—once celebrated as a model of consociational democracy—achieved broad political domination through its structures and systems across the country, including in the Chinese-majority municipality of Sibu in Sarawak. However, the study reveals how the regime deviated from ideal consociational principles, ultimately alienating ethnic minorities and fueling the rise of subnational regionalism.

The book focuses primarily on the role of Chinese timber tycoons under the leadership of the Sarawak United Peoples' Party (SUPP). Their influence over local social and political domains enabled them to broadly dominate local society. Through these local institutions, they established deeply rooted patron-client networks, parts of which were integrated into the Sarawak Barisan Nasional (SBN) machinery. However, growing local opposition meant that even politically well-connected timber tycoons could never achieve full domination. The increasing limits of these political structures led to the convergence of local and national forces calling for regime change and the subsequent rise of Sarawak regionalism discourse, which continues to structure Malaysian politics following BN's fall from power in 2018. This provides valuable insights into how politics unfolds on the ground by decentering state-centric narratives to emphasize their entanglement with society and regime continuity in the present.

A valuable book for academics and scholars of Malaysian politics, consociational democracy, ethnonationalism, the ethnic Chinese political economy of Southeast Asia, and regionalism. This book chronicles the history of Chinese miners in one of the largest mines in Northeast Asia from 1900 to 1948, situating this emergent working class at the nexus of industrial capitalism, imperial expansion, and nation-state construction. Coal from Fushun (in present-day Liaoning province) fuelled industrial development that enabled the JAPANESE EMPIRE and later rival Chinese regimes to secure their economic, political, and military presence in the region. In turn, the extraction, processing, and distribution of Fushun coal depended on rendering immobile previously mobile migrant workers through coercion, surveillance, and incentives. The loss of mobility for these migrant workers ultimately resulted in their dependence on the mine for their livelihood. Drawing on Chinese and Japanese archival sources, this book investigates the global forces and environmental conditions that shaped the rise of these interdependent yet asymmetrical relations, and illuminates how coal extraction under industrial capitalism subsumed human labor while concurrently reproducing unequal power relations between social groups.

In their heyday, Taiwan's sugar railways were the world's most extraordinary narrow gauge industrial railway system. Its tracks criss-crossed southern and central Taiwan and the track length of 3,000 kilometres exceeded the national railway's network. With sugar being Taiwan's largest export, by bringing sugar cane from the field to the mills and then sugar products to the ports, the sugar railways played a critical role in Taiwan's economic miracle. The railways were not limited to transporting sugar and instead carried a very diverse range of freight. It also had a passenger network of 600 kilometres that included limited stop express trains. In our book we focus on the twilight years of Taiwan's sugar railways in the 1990s when the still extensive system was entering a period of rapid closures. We tell the story of Taiwan's sugar railways using a collection of previously unpublished photographs. We also try to show the human side of this remarkable story by bringing in insights from extensive interviews with retired sugar railway workers.

This volume is the first annotated translation in any language of the ''Chojang chungga-ŭi'' (The Meaning of the ''Middle and Provisional'' in the ''First Stanza''), a little-known text that yielded considerable influence on early East Asian Buddhism. It corresponds to the first chapter of the Taesŭng saron hyŏnŭi ki (Notes on The Dark Meaning of the Four Treatises, [Belonging to] the Great Vehicle), a Samnon/Sanlun compendium written by the Paekche monk Hye’gyun (fl. 6th/7th c.) after he studied with the famous Chinese Sanlun teacher Falang (507–581).

Apparently directed at beginners, the ''Chojang chungga-ŭi'' explains fundamental concepts in detail, thus giving precious corroborative information on Chinese Sanlun as mirrored in Jizang's (549–623) works. Textual parallels with Jizang's Lunji (Traces of the Treatises) shed new light on the extent that both disciples were indebted to their teacher, Falang. Additionally, the text provides first-hand insight into the nature of early Samnon in Paekche and important clues for understanding the origins of the famous Silla monk Wǒnhyo's (617–686) patterns of exegesis. As the title implies, the text centers on the ''First Stanza,'' the fundamental exegetical formula Samnon/Sanlun students under Falang and his immediate successors had to master. The repetitive and formulaic style of the text shows that, contrary to widespread misconceptions, Sanlun/Samnon exegetes were less concerned with the scholastic study of authoritative texts than using the ''Chojang chungga-ŭi'' to rehearse formulae designed to lead the practitioner toward awakening. In doing so, they struggled to find new ways of expression that transcended the usual apophatic vs. cataphatic dichotomy of a middle path, avoiding any reification of the ''middle'' and the ''provisional.'' They created instead cataphatic formulae that constantly affirmed yet did not produce fixed meaning, just as ''a,'' the first character of the Siddham alphabet, pervades all texts, yet, as a negation prefix, constantly denies any attribution.

The Invention of a Language of Emptiness will be of great use to those interested in commentarial exegesis as meditational practice and East Asian Buddhists’ attempts at developing a language of emptiness.

In a study of over 80 buildings – shown by 40 images in the book, plus thousands of photos and videos online – Pizzato demonstrates how they reflect meta-theatrical projections from prior generations. They also affect the embodied, embedded, enacted, and extended (4E) cognition of current visitors, who bring performance frameworks of belief, hope, and doubt to the sacred site. This involves neuro-social, inner/outer theatre networks with patriarchal, maternal, and trickster paradigms.

European Churches and Chinese Temples as Neuro-Theatrical Sites investigates performative material cultures, creating dialogs between theatre, philosophy, history, and various (cognitive, affective, social, biological) sciences. Peripheral Linguistic Brutality is a sociolinguistic investigation into the production of “metalness” through language in the Asia Pacific. Concentrating on the ways local music scenes adopt, reject, and modify linguistic ideologies, the authors (hosts of the podcast Lingua Brutallica) examine how translocal participation in metal settings shapes how and why specific language forms are used to construct “metal language.” Although much research has been done on language flows and use in global subcultures, their volume intervenes in two key ways. First, most prior work has centered on hip-hop, which unlike metal has an established “origin” dialect, namely AAVE (African American Vernacular English), linked to concepts of authenticity in the scene. Second, writing on global language flows has focused on what happens when a language, mainly English, enters a new space or context—not on how individuals employ imported forms and reimagine already extant linguistic resources as indexes, or markers, of new identities. Through interviews with practicing metal lyricists from Australia, Indonesia, Japan, and Taiwan, Peripheral Linguistic Brutality therefore fills gaps in the knowledge of language’s role in translocal subcultures. Specifically, it sheds new light on how global subcultures spawn new local beliefs about the meaning and purpose of language forms, the sociolinguistic conflicts that can arise and influence language use when a scene enters a new locale, and metal itself as a global practice.

Focusing on East Asia from the nineteenth century to the present, Crafting Everyday Food highlights the role of technology in transforming traditional foods into modern ones and in reinventing industrialized foods as heritage foods. The seven expert researchers adopt a unique technological perspective to trace the transformation of traditional fermented foodstuffs typical of the region—kimchi, soy sauce, kōji, and tea—and the appropriation of new foods of nonlocal origin, such as beef and potato, into Asian diets. The essays discuss how modern technologies reconstructed traditional or “authentic” foods, showing how global flows of commodities, experts, and consumers, as well as the circulation of knowledge and practices, shaped the East Asian foodscape. She untangles the lengthy selection process and trial-and-error development of the block-bracket cluster before codification to reveal how design idiosyncrasies derived from an unlikely combination of legal codes and ethical imperatives. For example, dougong with arms projecting at a 45- or 60-degree angle from the wall plane—long dismissed as unorthodox—are shown to be a subtle design expression that yields to authority while it seeks to exploit archi-cultural standards. Harrer argues that the ethical dimensions of graphic shapes and the culturally charged space that dougong occupy are key to understanding this creative process.
