曾淑賢館長表示,國家圖書館近幾年來推動漢學領域學者捐贈圖書,期盼能將這些得之不易的學術研究文獻,透過君子立德,嘉惠後學,發揮更大效益。而陳英傑博士自美國普林斯頓大學東亞研究學系攻讀博士論文期間就與本館結緣,不僅多次出席本館辦理海外之活動。學養豐富的他同時也曾擔任如Malaysian Journal of Chinese Studies等國際期刊與國際合作研究專著的主編,可以說是未來國際漢學青年學者的翹楚之一,本次響應國圖政策,慨贈圖書嘉惠國人,不僅讓資源有效利用,也為他與臺灣留下更多美好的記憶。希望學界先進也能響應陳博士立德之舉,踴躍捐贈出版品,嘉惠更多前來國圖求取知識的讀者。
陳博士的演講以循道宗傳教士柯志仁(Harry R. Caldwell,1876-1970)的狩獵事蹟為中心,探討1920年代美國「男子漢」文明在福建的移殖。柯志仁在田納西州家鄉文化的熏陶下,培養出剛強的男子氣概。在福建的傳教與狩獵活動,正是此種男子氣概的體現。柯志仁以獵人、基督教信徒兩種身份自居,兩者相輔相成,密不可分。
狩獵對柯志仁的福音傳播至關重要。他在福建採集動物標本,尋獵傳說中危害鄉民的「藍虎」,均獲得美國自然史博物館(American Museum of Natural History)資助,令其得以僱用當地村民為助手,推動以自然探索為骨幹的經濟活動。「一手執來福槍,一手執聖經」的柯志仁,用現代化科技的象徵來福槍獵虎,破除中國人的迷信,使更多人信奉基督宗教,傳道成效更顯著。而他對神秘的藍虎的宣傳,也使福建成為一塊外國自然學家眼中未受工業化文明污染的化外淨土。最後,陳博士指出,柯志仁將傳道、博物館對樣本收集的贊助、對新動物的興趣等三者合而為一,點燃美國在領土以外擴張其宗教與科學的希望。並以福建地區作為實驗此種新的文明擴展方式的場地。
漢學研究中心於2022年3月31日下午,舉辦本年首次寰宇漢學講座,邀請本中心接待之教育部短期來臺研究學人,英國倫敦大學亞非學院(SOAS University of London)人類學博士候選人何寶玲(Pauline Harlay)女士主講,講題為「社會性學習:品味語言的分享」。活動並邀請中央研究院民族學研究所余舜德研究員主持。
