四百年前大臺北地區人煙稀少，觸目所及多為荒煙蔓草的景象。臺北如何發展到今日繁榮的盛況？本書透過歷史文獻、照片、建築圖、地圖和實地訪查，構築起臺北的發展脈絡。十八世紀的臺北不似今日，當年天龍國沒有龍，只有羅漢腳。漢人隨著航運移居至此，開闢土地，興建寺廟、形成街市。從清代的開拓、日本的建設到戰後的發展，留下許多精彩故事與經典建築。

本書作者透過歷史文獻、檔案資料、舊照片、建築圖和地圖或石碑等遺物，加上實際走訪調查，從實際留存下來或留存於影像中的建築和街景，及曾經生活在其中的人的故事，以清代、日治時期到戰後的時間軸，串起臺北都市空間變遷的過程。從新莊、萬華和相鄰的西門町地區，到北邊的大龍峒、圓山和劍潭，作者將臺北分成四個地區，從重要建築的興建、時代的背景和市街的發展，來看各地區空間發展的故事。

新莊最初因稻米生產和外銷而興起為市街，在日治時期市區規劃後街屋新建立面牌樓，從留存的構造和裝飾可以想像曾經有過的繁華。萬華的名稱來自舊名艋舺，這裡曾經是原住民駕著小舟往來淡水河邊的港口。由於大陸移民及兩岸貿易往來，萬華繼新莊之後發展成熱鬧的市街。清代興建寺廟和市街，經過日治時期的規劃，紅磚街屋櫛比鱗次，擁有全臺灣學生人數最多的小學。其中「剝皮寮歷史街區」仍保存清代街道的樣貌。

西門町原來是窪地，日治時期開始興建街屋，日本商人在此經營各種商店，提供來臺日人生活所需，開啟了西門町的商業發展。窪地填高後形成新市區，西門町日益熱鬧，轉型為時尚區。大龍峒、圓山和基隆河對岸的劍潭地區山明水秀，從清代以來就是關係密切、共同發展的地區。清代時同安人在此定居，興建四十四坎街屋和保安宮，日治之初日本人設立圓山公園及對面的臺灣神社，後來民間也興建孔廟，在今天成為花博公園和圓山大飯店等重要地標。

從建築的興建過程及其建築特色，可以知道這四個地區因開發時間和所在地理環境而有不同的地區特性。本書構築臺北歷史、建築與空間的發展脈絡，細說臺北從清代的開拓、日本人的西化與和風建設、戰後的發展、家族崛起的故事、產業轉換與公共政策的發展過程，帶領讀者跨越時間與空間的阻隔，見證這段地虎變天龍的歷程。

本書共收錄兩本畫冊，第一本《拉姆加駐印軍記》（Ramgath-now it can be told），英文本，出版年代不詳，根據內容判斷，原本可能是屬軍事機密檔案，後來才公開；第二本《新一軍戰鬥寫真‧印緬遠征畫史》，1947年出版，中英對照本。

兩本有時間關聯性，1942年4月，中國遠征軍由孫立人將軍所領導的新三十八軍，為掩護全軍後撤，孤軍落後，而取道深山密林轉進印度，最後轉往拉姆加集訓。同年八月，中國駐印軍正式誕生。《拉姆加駐印軍記》即是記載駐印軍的訓練過程，而《新一軍戰鬥寫真‧印緬遠征畫史》，則是駐印軍經過訓練後進行二次遠征印度，最後取得最後勝利的戰鬥紀錄。

一九四八年底爆發的徐蚌會戰，是國共戰爭中最關鍵的戰役。徐蚌會戰，國軍眾不敵寡，損失五十萬精銳，澈底改變了戰爭的天平，更種下國府敗走台灣的因子。劉峙為國民革命軍陸軍二級上將，在中山艦事件、北伐戰爭及中原大戰諸役獲勝連連、屢立戰功，甚得蔣中正器重，被譽為「常勝將軍」及「五虎上將」。一九四六年國共戰爭全面爆發，一九四八年六月，蔣中正任命劉峙為「徐州剿匪總司令」，為徐蚌會戰的最高指揮官，他在戰敗後受到許多責難、更在戰史上留下「無能」的汙名。

本書是劉峙從未公開發表過的戰時日紀，是極其珍貴的第一手史料，記錄徐蚌會戰期間諸事，透露出政治干涉軍事、指揮官無實權、布署及指揮失調、戰略舉棋不定、後勤補給不足、黨員精神渙散、諂媚領袖之風，各種導致國民黨全面潰敗的原因。對於民國史及國共戰爭史皆具有相當重要的研究價值。

但，本書並非傳統漢字書法哲學的新詮釋，也不是書法藝術哲學的形式與風格的思想探討，而是根源性地從――手寫軀體姿勢變化與現實環境或自然景觀之間，所存在的書法美學的根源性產生及其歷史變革中，――各類書法形式的再現或複製設計的相關基礎認知問題，來展開體系性結構的多層次新詮釋。本書無疑的，可稱它是當代臺灣地區歷來的此種類型的具原創性新作品。
本書的相關全部內容，主要是包括四大類主題歸納：

壹、 傳統筆法的現代詮釋。其各篇主題有：(a).〈筆法與身體經驗歷程—書法與身體美學初探〉、(b).〈線條象形及其表現形式〉、(c)〈漢字書寫基礎課程—「字」的完成及其應用〉、(d).〈書寫的意志—關於自我的書寫及其可能〉。

貳、 書法與空間精神。其各篇主題有：(a).〈對米芾《吳江舟中詩卷》所作關於「水上書寫」的猜想〉、(b).〈招牌的隱喻：走讀城市的街道文字〉。

參、 書法與當代文字的書寫觀念。其各篇主題有：(a).〈看見書寫的條件〉、(b).〈在複製的時代看書法臨摹的作用〉。

肆、 書法與文化主題。其各篇主題有：(a).〈神聖的書寫—寫經的宗教與審美蘄向〉、(b).〈竹林七賢︰文化主題的形成與運用〉。

以上這些內容，都是近年來，本書作者陸續發表於其所任教學校的各期年刊通識學報上相關論文，此次才改以體系性彙編出版的新原創性專著。

另外，在本書圖示(頁44、159、315、316)中，是在呈現幾件本書作者個人的書法實例，大概是：以隸、草為主，隸書多取隸意結字，參酌楊淮表、石門頌一路的古隸，不刻意依傍一家；草書則嘗試結合米芾的靈動與于右任的醇厚，在碑帖風格看似對立中，用發勁速度輕重快慢等節奏流暢的互補寫法來呈現。這也意味著本書作者個人有相當的書法素養，並非只是透過閱讀書法典籍中的相關概念，來理解其所論述的書法哲學的知識而已。至於書後附錄本書作者幾項有關書寫的專利發明，也可見其探索各種書法研究的可能性之所以。

本書的初版發行於一九六五年，一九六九年又出了增訂版。增訂版為各篇論文添加了補注，補注的內容多來自於高坂在初版發行後撰寫的著作與論文。由於本書收錄的各篇最初發表在言論界雜誌上，高坂非常希望詳細地補充當初沒有完整論述的部分。不過，補注的內容針對初版，並非大規模的修改。因此，本書收錄的各篇論文，如實反映了高坂最初撰文時的思考與寫作過程。

儘管如此，本書畢竟是將近四十年前的著作。在國際政治的格局與日本的內外形勢已經發生了巨大變化的今天，讀者或許會有先入為主的判斷：這本書的內容是不是已經過時了呢？筆者相信，在閱讀過程中，多數讀者能從本書的文字中收穫許多適用於當代的啟示。當然，本書雖然已經儘量不使用專業術語，但書的內容仍舊具有較強的知識性。如果缺乏有關時代背景的知識，讀者或許無法理解本書的內容。筆者將在下文中概括本書的內容，並從當代視角考察本書的意義，希望給讀者們帶來方便。

收錄於本書的七篇論文中，開篇的《現實主義者的和平論》與結尾的《海洋國家日本的構想》最為重要。中間的五篇論文可以說是高坂更詳細地探討他在《現實主義者的和平論》中提出的觀點、逐漸走向《海洋國家日本的構想》的思考過程。因此，筆者將首先詳細分析《現實主義者的和平論》，然後簡要概述中間的五篇論文，最後闡述《海洋國家日本的構想》的基本內容。

非武裝中立論的魅力是其更加忠實於日本社會廣泛肯定的價值，即憲法體現的絕對和平主義。高坂認為，外交政策不僅要追求國家安全，還必須追求某種理念的實現，而超越權力政治、實現絕對和平正是日本應該追求的價值。在這點上，高坂與指責憲法是「強制的產物」、和平主義是共產陣營的宣傳的「保守派」劃清了界限。

此外，中立論的觀點並不充分，無視了如何從權力政治的現狀順利地走向絕對和平的理想的方法。例如，阪本斷言只要日本決定了轉向中立，其他問題就只是「高度的技術性問題」。高坂予以反駁，認為如何解決「技術性問題」與明確絕對和平在理念上的正確性同等重要。

在這點上，高坂批判中立論過於曖昧。首先，用互不侵犯條約取代美蘇在遠東地區的同盟集團、靠撤軍限制東西方陣營的軍事力量——這種做法值得考慮，但無論哪種措施都離不開具有能夠制裁違規行為的實力的國家的支持。因此，同盟與這種意義上的中立並不矛盾。此外，有些人士期待國際局勢的變化，主張日本率先實踐中立主義。然而，這種想法無視了駐日美軍支撐駐韓美軍的現狀。如果日本脫離日美同盟，駐韓美軍會孤立，朝鮮半島的均勢將崩潰，這是有可能讓日本陷入危機的過於危險的「賭博」。

為了克服權力政治、推動絕對和平的實現，重要的不是在同盟或中立之間「二選一」，而是把由同盟構成的均勢作為前提，謀求緩解遠東地區的緊張局勢。在這一選擇上，現實主義與理想主義有可能進行對話。

高坂建議把下列緩解緊張局勢的具體政策作為「第一步」：
　　（一）日本與中共的邦交正常化（當時日本承認臺灣國民黨政府，與大陸共產黨政府之間沒有建交）
　　（二）凍結進而削減（兩大陣營）在朝鮮半島的軍隊，反對武力統一半島
　　（三）日本宣佈不擁有核武器
　　（四）促成被稱為「洛迦諾方式」的互不侵犯體制
　　（五）在不破壞均勢的前提下削減（兩大陣營）在遠東地區的軍隊

如今看來，高坂的立論可以說反映了一九六0年代初期的時代精神。肯定憲法體現的作為戰後日本理念的絕對和平——這是否定佔領改革的主流保守派不會提出的設想。既肯定憲法理念、又肯定自衛隊與日美安保——這是以修憲為目標的岸信介政權以承認日美安保條約的改定為代價而被迫下臺後，日本政府才可能表明的立場。

此外，當時的戰略理論的潮流——區分核武器與常規武力、指出常規武力在任何時代都具有一定作用——也強有力地支持著高坂的立論。有限戰爭理論同等看待核武器與常規無力，在一九五0年代風靡一時。然而，到了一九六0年代，學者們認為核武器與常規武力沒有明確的差異，既然無法否定使用戰術核武器會引發全面核戰爭的可能性，那麼核大國也無法使用核武器。在這種情況下，只有常規武力的國家也可以組合運用外交手段與常規武力，在某種程度上用自己的方式實現安全保障。高坂建議日本宣佈不擁有核武器，就有著這樣的戰略論的背景。

In Land Wars, Brian DeMare draws on new archival research to offer an updated and comprehensive history of this attempt to fundamentally transform the countryside. Across this vast terrain loyal Maoists dispersed, intending to categorize poor farmers into prescribed social classes, and instigate a revolution that would redistribute the land. To achieve socialist utopia, the Communists imposed and performed a harsh script of peasant liberation through fierce class struggle. While many accounts of the campaigns give false credence to this narrative, DeMare argues that the reality was much more complex and brutal than is commonly understood—while many villagers prospered, there were families torn apart and countless deaths. Uniquely weaving narrative and historical accounts, DeMare powerfully highlights the often devastating role of fiction in determining history. This corrective retelling ultimately sheds new light on the contemporary legacy of land reform, a legacy fraught with inequality and resentment, but also hope.

The Nuosu people, who were once overlords of vast tracts of farmland and forest in the uplands of southern Sichuan and neighboring provinces, are the largest division of the Yi ethnic group in southwest China. This translation is a rare example in English of Indigenous ethnic literature from China.

Mario Sabattini (1944-2017), Emeritus Professor at the Department of Asian and North African Studies, Ca' Foscari University at Venice, focused mainly on Zhu Guangqian's aesthetic thought, and poetic in general. He has published extensively in Italian, English and Chinese. He has been a pioneer in the teaching of Thai language in Italy. From 1999 to 2003, Sabattini served as Cultural Counsellor at the Italian Embassy in the People’s Republic of China.

Elisa Levi Sabattini, Ph.D. (2006), Ca’ Foscari University at Venice and INALCO at Paris, is Associate Professor of Chinese Philology at L’Orientale University of Naples and affiliated Research Fellow at the Frieberg Center for Asian Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her research focuses on the intellectual history of Early China, with special attention to Western Han political rhetoric within the construction of the monarchic system, ethical standards, early economic thought.

The completion of the transcontinental railroad in May 1869 is usually told as a story of national triumph and a key moment for American Manifest Destiny. In 1221, in what we now call Turkmenistan, a captive held by Mongol soldiers confessed that she had swallowed her pearls in order to safeguard them. She was immediately executed and eviscerated. On finding several pearls, Chinggis Qan (Genghis Khan) ordered that they cut open every slain person on the battlefield. Pearls, valued for aesthetic, economic, religious, and political reasons, were the ultimate luxury good of the Middle Ages, and the Chingissid imperium, the largest contiguous land empire in history, was their unmatched collector, promoter, and conveyor. Thomas T. Allsen examines the importance of pearls, as luxury good and political investment, in the Mongolian empire—from its origin in 1206, through its unprecedented expansion, to its division and decline in 1370—in order to track the varied cultural and commercial interactions between the northern steppes and the southern seas.

Focusing first on the acquisition, display, redistribution, and political significance of pearls, Allsen shows how the very act of forming such a vast nomadic empire required the massive accumulation, management, and movement of prestige goods, and how this process brought into being new regimes of consumption on a continental scale. He argues that overland and seaborne trade flourished simultaneously, forming a dynamic exchange system that moved commodities from east to west and north to south, including an enormous quantity of pearls. Tracking the circulation of pearls across time, he highlights the importance of different modes of exchange—booty-taking, tributary relations, market mechanisms, and reciprocal gift-giving. He also sheds light on the ways in which Mongols' marketing strategies made use of not only myth and folklore but also maritime communications networks created by Indian-Buddhist and Muslim merchants skilled in cross-cultural commerce.

In Allsen's analysis, pearls illuminate Mongolian exceptionalism in steppe history, the interconnections between overland and seaborne trade, recurrent patterns in the employment of luxury goods in the political cultures of empires, and the consequences of such goods for local and regional economies.

The stories are set in the fictional county of Tsezhung, where Tsering Döndrup’s characters live their lives against the striking backdrop of Tibet’s natural landscape and go about their daily business to the ever-present rhythms of Tibetan religious life. Tsering Döndrup confronts pressing issues: the corruption of religious institutions; the indignities and injustices of Chinese rule; poverty and social ills such as gambling and alcoholism; and the hardships of a minority group struggling to maintain its identity in the face of overwhelming odds. Ranging in style from playful updates of traditional storytelling techniques to narrative experimentation, Tsering Döndrup’s tales pay tribute to the resilience of Tibetan culture.

Editor Bio
Tsering Döndrup was born in 1961 in Qinghai, China. He began writing in the early 1980s and has published numerous collections of short fiction and four full-length novels. His work has been translated into several languages, and he is the recipient of a number of Tibetan, Mongolian, and nationwide literary prizes in China.

The Dutch and English East India Companies were formidable organizations that were gifted with expansive powers that allowed them to conduct diplomacy, wage war and seize territorial possessions. But they did not move into an empty arena in which they were free to deploy these powers without resistance. Early modern Asia stood at the center of the global economy and was home to powerful states and sprawling commercial networks. The companies may have been global enterprises, but they operated in a globalized region in which they encountered a range of formidable competitors. This groundbreaking collection of essays explores the place of the Dutch and English East India Companies in Asia and the nature of their engagement with Asian rulers, officials, merchants, soldiers, and brokers. Editor Bio
Adam Clulow is Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow at Monash University. He is the author of The Company and the Shogun: The Dutch Encounter with Tokugawa Japan (Columbia University Press, 2014) which won multiple awards including the Jerry Bentley Prize in World History from the American Historical Association. He is, most recently, the editor with Lauren Benton and Bain Attwood of Protection and Empire: A Global History (Cambridge University Press, 2017).

Tristan Mostert is a PhD candidate at Leiden University. His dissertation focuses on conflicts over access to the clove trade in the eastern Indonesian archipelago in the seventeenth century. His earlier publications include Silk Thread: China and the Netherlands from 1600 (co-authored with Jan van Campen, Rijksmuseum, 2015).
