發現絲綢、白銀與鴉片: 打開中國天朝大門,改變現代東西方世界的貿易之路
2026年10月
臺北:時報出版
Michael Pembroke

Flying Brothers: From Dogfights to Diplomacy in Cold War Southeast Asia
Flying Brothers: From Dogfights to Diplomacy in Cold War Southeast Asia
October, 2026
Ithaca: Cornell University Press
Daniel Jackson
Instead of retelling Vietnam, Flying Brothers follows America's three treaty allies in Southeast Asia—Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines—showing how they built airpower that actually worked. The deal was stark: trade territory for technology. By hosting US bases, these countries gained jets, radar, and training they couldn't otherwise afford—while wrestling with the sovereignty headaches that came with a foreign force on their soil.
At the heart of the story are "diplomats in flight suits": American advisors flying, fixing, and planning alongside their counterparts to turn hand-me-down aircraft into credible defenses and hard-won victories—from the Philippines' air-ground campaign against the Huks to Taiwan's measured, missile-age deterrence. Along the way, Daniel Jackson highlights dogfights, ramp-side ingenuity, and the annual "Flying Brothers" weapons meets that forged real fraternity among allied airmen.
For readers of military and aviation history, Cold War strategy, and Southeast Asia, this is a fast-moving, clear-eyed account of how alliances actually fight: not with speeches, but with checklists, radar tracks, and pilots who know when to hold fire—and when to press the attack. The result is a persuasive case that well-run advisory missions, tied to coherent political-military aims, can succeed at far lower cost than direct US intervention.

From Empire to Internationalism: Japan's Integration into the Postwar World Order
From Empire to Internationalism: Japan's Integration into the Postwar World Order

Ithaca: Cornell University Press
Lori Watt
When Japan joined the United Nations in 1956, none of the welcoming delegates dwelled on its history of colonial rule and military conquest. Existing accounts explain its rapid reintegration into the global order through Cold War politics or a longer tradition of Japanese internationalism. Lori Watt offers a new account: The American-led dismantling of Japan's empire provided elites with a new vocabulary that allowed them to re-narrate its imperial past in terms associated more with former colonies than former empires.
Watt traces this dynamic from postwar planning in Washington to Japan's eventual admission to the UN. She shows how leaders of a defeated nation appropriated a rhetoric of self-determination, popular sovereignty, and human rights, all concepts used by anticolonial nationalists elsewhere. Provocative and persuasive, From Empire to Internationalism offers a fresh perspective on how the vocabulary and practices of decolonization shaped the postwar international order.

The Mamluk Sultanate, Medieval Japan and Beyond: Strong Asymmetries in Social Relations Compared
The Mamluk Sultanate, Medieval Japan and Beyond: Strong Asymmetries in Social Relations Compared
November, 2026
Berlin: De Gruyter Oldenbourg
Edited by Stephan Conermann and Toru Miura
The systems of rule and the social structures of medieval Europe, the Mamluk Sultanate, and medieval Japan show a basic similarity: all three were hierarchical systems in which social relationships were characterized by dependency (e.g. Lehen, iqṭāʿ, shōen). Between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries, mounted warriors (knights in Europe, Mamluks in West Asia, bushi in Japan) became the mainstay of military and political power in both Asia and Europe. The Japanese shōen system emphasized strong loyalty of retainer to lord and cultivator to domain lord. However, the Kamakura lord was no sovereign with absolute power, even though he was leader of the bushi, and provincial warriors united to negotiate their positions. In the iqṭāʿ system of the Mamluk Sultanate, Mamluk soldiers were awarded the right to collect taxes from land temporarily granted to them. But when the elite military status of Mamluks was limited to a single generation, they worked to establish relationships through intermarriage and waqf donations. This edited volume looks at the systems of rule and the social structures of the Mamluk Sultanate and Medieval Japan, analyzing the basic parallels of hierarchical systems characterized by multiple dependencies at different levels of society.

Masters of the Earth: A History of the Golden Horde, 1219–1502
December, 2026
London: Reaktion Books
Roman Hautala
The Golden Horde was a powerful nomadic state that shaped Eastern Europe and modern-day Kazakhstan from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century. Masters of the Earth traces its rise within the Mongol Empire, its period of independence and prosperity and its eventual decline in the face of continual civil conflict. Roman Hautala introduces the administrative and ethnic structures of the Horde, its religious policies and its wide-ranging commercial ties with both East and West. The Golden Horde emerges not only as a military force but as a dynamic society whose influence reached far beyond the steppe. Understanding this history offers a richer sense of Eurasia’s past and the connections that shaped it.

A Panda the Nation Could not See: Diplomacy, Fandom, and Miss Panda of Republican China
A Panda the Nation Could not See: Diplomacy, Fandom, and Miss Panda of Republican China
November, 2026
London: Routledge
Yulei Guo
Before most Chinese citizens ever saw a giant panda in person, they had already fallen in love with it. This book reconstructs how Republican China developed an emotional, political, and media-driven relationship with the giant panda from the 1920s to the 1940s, tracing the emergence of panda diplomacy, celebrity culture, and the earliest forms of panda fandom.
Drawing on more than 2,000 Republican-era Chinese newspaper and magazine reports, this book uncovers a forgotten history of the giant panda in modern China. Combining media history, animal studies, and cultural analysis, it examines how the panda became a powerful national symbol through diplomacy, journalism, spectacle, commerce, science, and popular emotion. Through the story of “Miss Panda” and the emergence of early panda fandom, the book offers a new perspective on China's relationship with animals, modernity, and international exchange during a period of war, instability, and social transformation.

Island of Pain, Island of Hope: A Social History of Leprosy in U.S.-Occupied Philippines
Island of Pain, Island of Hope: A Social History of Leprosy in U.S.-Occupied Philippines
December, 2026
Champaign: University of Illinois Press
Febe D. Pamonag
In the early twentieth century, the colonial government of the United States in the Philippines confined people with leprosy on the island of Culion. Febe D. Pamonag examines claims that the policy protected public health and tells the stories of the affected men, women, and children.
As Pamonag shows, Filipinos responded in many ways to the Segregation Law. Some resisted arrest and confinement. Others negotiated or complied because of family needs, fear, gender, class, and economic pressure. Rare archival documents reconstruct life inside Culion’s communities, where people fought for better food and living conditions and used the courts to challenge their confinement and assert their rights. Pamonag also highlights previously untapped accounts that reveal how women navigated the stigma of the disease and the gendered restrictions imposed on them.
A new chapter in the history of public health, Island of Pain, Island of Hope shows the courageous and creative ways Filipinos coped with life under colonial rule.

Animation Thinks: A Story of Media Entanglements in China
September, 2026
Oakland: University of California Press
Panpan Yang
Animation Thinks charts a fragmentary history of Chinese animation from the 1920s to the present. Focusing on animation's encounters with other art forms, including photography, painting, calligraphy, and porcelain, Panpan Yang examines contemporary Chinese animation trans-spatially, tracing how the meaning of Chinese animated works subtly shifts when moving between spaces such as the film industry and the contemporary art world. Ultimately, Yang argues that Chinese animation thinks time and space to a degree unimaginable in other media, offering an understanding of space that is neither completely graphic nor entirely photographic and an understanding of time as heterogeneous, disruptive, and surprising.

Phoenixes, Textiles, and Religious Paintings: Migration of an Oriental Motif into the Late Medieval
September, 2026
Leiden: Brill
Kunhang Li and Wim François
Imagine a Chinese phoenix shimmering on a 14th-century silk chasuble or a 15th-century Italian painting. How did this exotic motif travel so far? This book traces the journey of fenghuang-themed silks along the Silk Road, their encounter with the Christian phoenix, and their use in Catholic liturgical vestments and depiction in religious painting. You discover how luxury textiles shaped sacred imagery and how a single motif was reinterpreted across cultures. Featuring images of rarely shown religious paintings and textiles, this study opens a vivid window onto cultural-religious exchange, artistic adaptation, and the dynamics of the medieval luxury market, offering fresh insights into East-West dialogue.

Empire by Association: Agriculture and the Reorganization of the Rural Economy in Colonial Korea
Empire by Association: Agriculture and the Reorganization of the Rural Economy in Colonial Korea
September, 2026
New Haven: Yale University Press
Holly Stephens
Drawing on the diaries of everyday farmers, Holly Stephens examines the introduction of scientific and commercial agriculture in Korea from the late nineteenth century through liberation from Japanese rule in 1945. After Japan annexed Korea in 1910, colonial bureaucrats introduced numerous agricultural policies as they sought to turn Korea into a useful imperial possession. In particular, the colonial government hoped to establish Korea as a source of raw materials. To support the necessary increase in cultivation, it created policies introducing new cultivars, new farming methods, and new procedures for crop sales. Yet nature and farmers alike defied the expectations of colonial planners.
To demonstrate how the colonial infrastructure of scientific agriculture was experienced and interpreted by ordinary farmers, Stephens traces the implementation of colonial agricultural policies through a series of semi-governmental associations, which were the main agents of the colonial state in the rural economy. As these associations became embedded within the rural economy, they took on significance not just as a representation of the government but also as a conduit of new exchange networks and understandings of agriculture based on scientific and commercial principles, issues that would continue to influence agricultural production even after liberation.

Unrepayable Debt: Law, Redress, Reconciliation, and the Unmaking of Empire
October, 2026
Chicago: The University of Chicago Press
Yukiko Koga
Unrepayable Debt explores belated attempts to reckon with the savage plundering of labor and life under the Japanese empire. Located within global conversations on reparations for colonialism and slavery, and centered on slave labor lawsuits brought by Chinese victims seeking overdue justice in Japanese courts, Yukiko Koga traces a sea change in the legal sphere propelled by an unprecedented transnational redress movement. The lawsuits exposed not only the original violence but also a structure of transitional injustice etched onto the unmaking of the Japanese empire, which left victims silenced and unredressable for decades.
Challenging the idea of reckoning as a discrete event that brings closure through settlements, apology, or compensation, Koga’s ethnography details the slow and messy intergenerational work of reconciliation on the ground. The book shows how the re-pairing of severed relations, separated by lineages of victimhood and perpetration, lies at the core of repair. By bringing to the surface the prolonged and entangled processes of decolonization and deimperialization, Unrepayable Debt compels a rethinking of what redress, repair, and reconciliation mean, how they are practiced, and where accountability lies.

Masters of Their Own Destiny: Asians in the First World War
Masters of Their Own Destiny: Asians in the First World War
October, 2026
Singapore: NUS Press
Edited by Claire Thi Liên Tran
Accounts of World War I tend to focus on Europe, the epicenter of this conflict, and find in its battlefields the later death of empires, spreading revolution, and eventual decolonization. However, the war was also global, drawing in people from all over the world while rapidly circulating ideas and innovations far beyond Europe.
Almost two million non-Europeans participated in the war as soldiers, workers, and professionals, including Asians in particular. They could be found in the battlefields of France, behind the lines in munitions factories and military hospitals, in the frozen construction sites of the Murmansk Railway, and in Mesopotamia's burning deserts. The voices of these volunteers and conscripts are rarely heard; the war’s narratives are mainly European. And yet, here and there, lone voices pierce the silence.
In a compelling intervention in World War I historiography, Masters of Their Own Destiny offers a history from below, demonstrating how rare personal accounts may illuminate broader historical forces. Alongside the story of Nguyen Xuan Mai, a Vietnamese military doctor whose pursuit of professional recognition ended in disillusionment with colonial promises, this study draws on a wealth of material like Indian soldiers' letters, Vietnamese workers' censored correspondence, and records of Chinese laborers who witnessed revolution in Russia. It gives voice to hitherto ignored wartime experiences that later transformed the expectations of millions of colonial subjects and seeded the anticolonial movements that followed.

The Book of China: A Persian Merchant's Description of the Ming State for the Ottoman Court
The Book of China: A Persian Merchant's Description of the Ming State for the Ottoman Court
October, 2026
New York: Columbia University Press
Ali Akbar Khatayi. Edited and translated by Kaveh Hemmat, John Curry, and Hyunhee Park
In the early sixteenth century, a Persian-speaking Muslim merchant named Ali Akbar Khatayi traveled to China and stayed for six years. There he acquired inside knowledge of the Ming imperial court and gained familiarity with the government bureaucracy, the military, and the daily lives and culture of ordinary people. In a treatise presented to the rulers of the Ottoman Empire, Khatayi laid out his observations—here translated in full into English for the first time.
The Book of China is the most in-depth and sophisticated account of China's government, society, and culture written by a foreigner before the era of European global dominance and an incomparable record of Eurasian perceptions of China at the dawn of the gunpowder age. In contrast to travelers such as Marco Polo, Khatayi not only chronicled sights and wonders but also sought systematic explanations for Ming China's wealth and power. He found the answer in Chinese governmental institutions and the universal rule of law, to which administrators and even the emperor himself were subject. His text also provides vivid descriptions of street life, festivals, and places from temples to brothels to the prison where he and his companions were detained. Opening a window onto the colorful worlds of the Ming court and the Silk Road, The Book of China shows how travel and cultural contact could inspire political imagination across continents.

Nutritional Imperialism: How Science Turned Difference into Sickness in China
Nutritional Imperialism: How Science Turned Difference into Sickness in China
October, 2026
Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press
Hilary A. Smith
For more than a century, Western observers have treated Chinese foodways as evidence of deficiency, danger, or backwardness. In Nutritional Imperialism, Hilary A. Smith shows how these assumptions entered the heart of modern nutrition science and reshaped understandings of health, diet, and difference. Nutrition scientists, physicians, and policymakers presented Western dietary patterns as universal benchmarks of health and transformed ordinary physiological variation into signs of pathology.
Beginning in the late nineteenth century, Western researchers compared Chinese diets to Euro-American norms and framed rice-based, low-dairy, and low-meat eating patterns as evidence of weakness. Over time, these judgments hardened into scientific claims about vitamin deficiency, protein insufficiency, lactose intolerance, and alcohol metabolism—each treated as a disorder requiring intervention. The book follows these ideas from the early twentieth century to the early twenty-first, showing how Chinese scientists and officials both adopted and contested nutritional standards shaped elsewhere.
Through detailed historical cases, Nutritional Imperialism calls for closer scrutiny of how science defines normalcy. The book offers a powerful reminder that expertise is never neutral—and that nutritional standards carry political consequences long after their origins are forgotten.

The Silver Thread of the Deep: A Cultural History of Shark Fin in China and Beyond
The Silver Thread of the Deep: A Cultural History of Shark Fin in China and Beyond

Cambridge: Harvard University Asia Center
Ronald C. Po
ften gracing the tables of weddings and banquets, shark fin symbolizes opulence and prestige in China and beyond. Yet its rise from offcut to delicacy reveals a complex history of how value is constructed and transformed. Drawing on sources in Chinese and English, as well as materials in French, Japanese, Spanish, and Italian, The Silver Thread tracks how this oceanic product came to have symbolic and material value, particularly during the Ming and Qing periods when domestic affluence deepened and became entangled with transregional commerce. Each chapter revolves around a question, such as: How did shark fin make its way from sea to banquet hall? Who advocated for its classification as a delicacy? How were taste, medicine, and ethics intertwined in its consumption?
In The Silver Thread, taste constitutes a language of social and moral distinction rather than sensation per se. Shark fin is both an object and an idea at the crossroads of nature and culture, where ritual and economy are mutually implicated, and where excess and moderation coincide. This book is hardly an apologia for shark fin consumption. It is, in part, a use of history to revisit tradition. Extending his analysis beyond cuisine, Ronald C. Po reconsiders “maritime China” less as a venue for trade, war, or navigation than a porous space formed through meaning and identity.
