Fear of the False: Forensic Science and the Law of Crime in Colonial South Asia

Fear of the False uncovers colonial South Asia's critical role in the development of forensic science. Around 1900, the government of British India created a web of institutions for the scientific detection of crime. Driven by anxieties about "native mendacity," newly minted forensic analysts focused on uncovering faked evidence planted by South Asians. These experts, joining toxicologists known as "chemical examiners," were supposed to extract objective, scientific truth in the service of British justice. But in trying to counteract the presumed tendency of colonized peoples to lie, the system enabled widespread misconduct by state experts, increasing the risk of wrongful convictions of South Asian defendants. Through scrupulously documented legal cases, Mitra Sharafi reveals that colonial dynamics put special pressure on the relationship between truth and justice. Examining falsity on both sides of the law through the use of testing to (mis)identify poisons, blood, and spermatozoa, as well as debates over adversarialism and inquisitorialism in the colonial courtroom, Fear of the False explores advances in forensic science and shortcuts in criminal procedure against the backdrop of colonial mistrust. Geographies of Poverty in China: Power, Politics and the Rural Poor

Critically examining China’s Targeted Poverty Alleviation campaign, this book challenges the dominant narrative of a complete victory over poverty. Drawing on extensive fieldwork across multiple provinces, it examines how the Chinese state conceptualises and acts upon poverty as a technical, depoliticised issue, often through disruptive interventions such as mass resettlement. Drawing attention to the uncertain and enduring consequences of campaign-style governance, the book provides fresh insights into Chinese politics, development and political geography. It offers a different way of thinking about poor people and poor places in China, essential for researchers focused on poverty management and state power.

Scenes of Affliction: Begging and Public Suffering in Urban China

On the streets of every major city in China, people perform stories of poverty, illness, and disability, singing or sitting with written signs to solicit public charity. In Scenes of Affliction, cultural and medical anthropologist Trang X. Ta draws on ethnographic research and media coverage, primarily in Beijing and Guangzhou, to explore how individuals and families—many of them migrants from poor rural villages—publicize their medical plights to seek not only aid but also recognition of their moral worth and human dignity. Their testimonies of adversity and destitution represent a counternarrative to state propaganda about widespread economic prosperity and social progress. By migrating to cities to seek medical care and public assistance, sufferers are asserting their right to life and a livelihood in the new China. But their continual solicitation and portrayal of need become a form of tragic injury, turning them into entrepreneurs of their own misery. Regarded as vagrants and even criminals, these supplicants constitute a working community engaged in performative labor. As savvy observers of human behavior with a streetwise understanding of the urban infrastructure, they use their bodies, voices, and stories as moral capital to earn a living in spaces hostile to their existence. With its focus on urban spectacle, registers of moral value, and moments of both despair and resilience, Scenes of Affliction makes an original contribution to the comparative study of vulnerable populations engaged in unacknowledged care and labor.

徐復觀致學生書柬

本書由翟志成主編，收錄了徐復觀先生致授業學生書柬，包含曹永洋、杜維明，楊牧（王靖獻）、王孝廉、翟志成等九組，共計三百三十餘封（另附錄杜維明致徐復觀書信等五封）。徐復觀致書的學生，多為學界重要知名學者，而杜維明、楊牧二人，更分別為本院哲學組院士、文哲所第一任所長。書信忠實記錄了當代新儒家徐復觀與學生們的求學問學往返、學術學識討論，以及政治時事的評議等。其中涉及一些未曾公布的學術史真相，即或隻字片語，亦為一手資料，頗具學術參考的價值。本所於2001年曾出版黎漢基、曹永洋主編的《徐復觀家書集》，此書若能出版，更有合觀共參之重要意義。

Paper Performance: Suspicion and Asian American Archives

Since the late nineteenth century, various agencies of the U.S. government have developed elaborate bureaucratic procedures to manage "suspect" Asian groups. Ju Yon Kim explores the modes of engagement and contestation available to those who are subjected by the state to both relentless documentation and demands to perform—whether as lawful immigrants, obedient colonial subjects, or loyal Americans. Even as paper documentation has been critical to authorizing exclusion, surveillance, and incarceration by the state, it has also enabled performances with paper that have facilitated transnational passage, mobilized resistance to administration, and troubled the logic of racial and national classifications. Linking histories of Chinese immigration exclusion, the U.S. colonization of the Philippines, the internment of Japanese Americans, and FBI surveillance of political groups, Kim brings together studies of paperwork and performance to demonstrate their continued, intertwined impact on Asian American history and culture.

Decolonial Endurance: Lisu Worldmaking Against Chinese Settler Colonialism

What does it mean to live through a world coming undone? How do people carry on amid rupture, loss, and grief? Decolonial Endurance explores these questions through the turbulent lives of Indigenous Lisu subsistence farmers in China's Eastern Himalayas, bordering Myanmar and Tibet. Like many of China's Indigenous borderlands, this mountainous region has long borne the force of encroaching Chinese state power. Since the 1980s, the Chinese state has been compelling the Lisu to give up their subsistence lifeways, move into urban settlements, and send their children to government boarding schools. In exchange for the so-called gifts of development―healthcare, income, and education―they suffer environmental and social catastrophes such as mass landslides, strange new illnesses, and toxic food. Drawing on over a decade of engagement with the Lisu, Ting Hui Lau takes readers into the world of ex-shamans, heart-pained mothers, restless spirits, and demon-mad migrants as they grapple with the fallout from state development, which Lau argues is the latest phase in a centuries-long project of settler colonialism along China's Southwest frontier. At once a portrayal of loss and an ethnography of hope, Lau chronicles Lisu worldmaking amid this destruction, centering their quiet resistance through everyday acts of communal caretaking. In a time of escalating geopolitical and ecological crisis, this book calls for a new decolonial politics rooted in the transformative power of endurance.

Daoism, Internal Alchemy, and the Wonders of Serenity: Tenth Through Eighteenth Centuries

Simply keeping the mind clear and calm was, for many post-Tang Daoists, the path to eternal life and freedom. Through sheer serenity, practitioners believed they could attain immunity to hunger, eliminate sexual function, suspend breath and pulse, engage in astral travel, and command spirits and natural forces. In his meticulously researched study, Stephen Eskildsen examines how this perspective informed Daoist internal alchemists after the Tang dynasty (618–907), including prominent representatives of the Quanzhen tradition in the north and the Nanzong in the south. Drawing on a wide array of textual sources, he analyzes the teachings of figures like Qiu Chuji (1143–1227), Yin Zhiping (1169–1251), Zhang Boduan (ca. 984–1082), Bai Yuchan (1194–1229), Li Daochun (fl. 1288–1292), Yu Yan (ca. 1253–1314), and Wu Shouyang (1574–after 1641), among others. These adepts emphasized passive, straightforward methods that they believed gave rise to spontaneous psychic, sensory, and physiological phenomena—approaches they considered more effective than manipulating mind and body with overly complicated techniques. Eskildsen shows how Daoist internal alchemists, by advocating for the maintenance of serenity throughout a mundane life, articulated a unified vision of the Three Teachings—Daoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism—and frequently cited Confucian and Buddhist texts while reinterpreting and adapting their teachings. Particularly notable is their creative reinterpretation of Buddhist concepts such as “non-leakage” and the “Marks of the Great Man,” and their integration of ideas pertaining to the “mind-made body” and the intermediate state. Incorporating such elements played a critical role in shaping their vision of the ultimate soteriological goal: the completion and emancipation of the Yang Spirit. In turn, this Daoist synthesis prompted some to propagate—or ostensibly revive—a Buddhist internal alchemy. Offering a compelling contribution to the understanding of Daoism after the Tang, Eskildsen sheds light on a strand of internal alchemy that pursued the sustained cultivation of mental clarity and equanimity above all else.

Tin was everywhere in early modern China—lining tea chests, shaping religious vessels, alloyed into coins. Yet beneath this ordinary metal lies a story of migration, technology, and governance that paved the way for China's entry into global capitalism. The Tin Centuries uncovers how tin connected miners in Yunnan and Southeast Asia, entrepreneurs and traders across oceans, and Qing officials confronting unprecedented demands on natural resources. Yijun Wang traces how Chinese migrant miners established large-scale operations in mining frontiers like Gejiu, in the mountains of Southwest China, and on Bangka, an island off the coast of Sumatra, carrying with them not just techniques but what she calls a “social technology”: organizations of labor, capital, and fraternity culture that allowed them to dominate extraction in new environments. These enterprises fueled both European colonial expansion and the broader circuits of Asian commerce. At the same time, Qing bureaucrats turned mining administration into a crucible for technocratic statecraft. Influenced by the technocratic culture fostered by bannermen experts in the early Qing, bureaucrats at different administrative levels, especially those in Yunnan, codified technical knowledge, experimented with alloys, and integrated empirical expertise into governance. This incremental transformation culminated in Wu Qijun's mid-nineteenth-century Illustrated Strategy of Mines and Smelters in Yunnan. Mining and the management of mineral resources became a proving ground for a new political culture in which practical skill stood alongside Confucian learning. By following tin's movement from mountains and islands to imperial mintage and treasuries, The Tin Centuries reframes the history of technology, migration, and empire. It reveals how a seemingly humble metal reflected the changing trajectory of Qing statecraft and foreshadowed China's path toward modernity within an expanding global economy.
